Natural beauty Nonzuzo shares her regimen

Name: Nonzuzo (Khuzwayo) Mkhwanazi – No I am not married lol
Age: 24 (25 in November whoop)
Occupation: I work for a plastic packaging company but I am an artist at heart!

When and why did you go natural?

We might need some tea and biscuits for this one lol. I was going through a roughish patch in my life which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Basically life slapped me so hard I had no choice but to wake up – started questioning a lot of things, including some of my habits and beliefs. I then started questioning why I believed in chemically processing my hair. I was not pleased with my answer – so I made a conscious decision to reintroduce myself to my natural hair

Did you transition or big cop?

I transitioned for only 4 months (June 2012 – Oct 2012)… My relaxed hair reminded me too much of who I no longer wished to be so I big chopped 4 months after my last relaxer.

What is your hair type?

Haha! – I DO NOT KNOW. I have about 3 different textures of hair. My hair is thick with mostly tight coils – that’s how I’d describe it.

How did others (friends, family, and colleagues) react to your decision to go natural?

A lot of people I know were not too pleased at first when I big chopped because they had known me all my life with relaxed hair – now they loooove my kinks. My family embraced it. My mother has had dreadlocks for years now and so I guess she anticipated this – now both my little sister and I have returned to natural.

What is your current regimen?

I wash and treat my hair every 2nd weekend.  I first mask it with a homemade treatment of my choice – leave it in for about an hour then rinse off with my conditioner. I then have it twisted for a week and then I wear a twistout until my next wash day. Alternatively – I will wear the twists for longer as a protective style or just rock a high puff or cornrows until my next wash day.

What are your holy grail products?

Amla Oil + Castor oil + Olive oil + water – I mix all of this in a spray can and I use it daily. If my hair is braided/twisted I use only the oils – This does wonders for my hair. Oh and a good conditioner of course - I seldom use curl enhancers or gels etc. but I do like Aunt Jackies Curl la la products.

What do you like the most about natural hair/being natural?

*smiles* I honestly love everything about being natural – the versatility of my kinks and the freedom that comes with it. I love that it has inspired me to go natural in other areas of my life too. But above all – I love that it enables me to tell you a bit about myself and my history without even opening my mouth
