Miss South Africa and natural hair

The Miss SA 2015 finalists have been announced and once again, no natural beauties made the cut.

The finalists are gorgeous but I would like to see a girl competing in her natural for once. Growing up, watching Miss SA was a family tradition I always looked forward to. I looked up to the winners, my favourites being Basetsana Kumalo and Peggy Sue Khumalo, and hung their posters on my wall. Imagine if just one winner on my wall wore her hair natural. Imagine what that could do for a young impressionable girl.

Miss SA is an African beauty pageant but I feel the girls get judged on western standards of beauty, hence the weave. The organisers and judges of this pageant need to realize that we are such a diverse nation and our beauty comes in all sizes, colours and hair textures. Kinky/coily/curly hair is beautiful too! It is gorgeous, spectacular, stunning, impressive and empowering!

Entrants with natural hair should not be marked down for having the confidence to embrace it. They should have an equal chance at the crown as the girls with weaves or straight hair. And the girls that make it to the top 10 (top 12 this year) should be allowed the choice of wearing their hair natural.

What are your thoughts on the Miss SA pageant?
