When and why did you go natural?
Towards the end of my matric year. I was starting a new life soon in varsity and was itching for a drastic change so I decided to go natural. I did some research and haven’t looked back since.
Did you transition or big cop?
Bit of both. I did the big chop but then processed my hair (s-curl). But when that grew out I did the big chop again and went totally natural.
What is your hair type?
I think its 4c
How did others (friends, family, and colleagues) react to your decision to go natural?
I always had long, thick hair so some were surprised I would just cut it all off but no one really made a big deal of it. They understood it was just hair. Now my sister and cousin have even joined me on the journey and also did the big chop. My dad however got excited that he wouldn’t have to pay for salon trips anymore LOL
What is your current regimen?
I’m almost always in some kind of protective hairstyle and when I don’t I have a treatment done at the salon (Mizani is my absolute fav). Otherwise I wash (Tresemme) and condition at home, use coconut oil as a sealant and I swear by DrMiracle’s leave-in-conditioner. Another great product is ORS hair masque which I’ll use as a deep conditioner when my hair is really dry.
What are your holy grail products?
As mentioned above. DrMiracles leave-in-conditioner and hot gro treatment which I use to baste my scalp. Organic coconut oil for daily moisturising.
What do you like the most about natural hair/being natural?
I like the fact that I don’t have to spend as much money on my hair, my hair is healthy and I have options. I can rock my afro today, straight hair tomorrow and braids or a weave day after that.
