How Eleanor's move to Japan started her natural hair journey!
Name: Eleanor Williams
Occupation: Nursery Teacher by day and Natural Hair Blogger by night
When and why did you go natural?
I’ve always loved my curls but used to get relaxers just to tame them down as I thought they were too wild and out of control. Even though I still wore my hair curly in its relaxed state it wasn’t up until 2011 that I actually stopped relaxing my hair. But I still didn’t know anything about caring for natural hair properly. So when I moved to Tokyo at the beginning of 2013 my hair started breaking off really badly because of the dry cold winter air. I soon started searching online how to properly care for naturally curly hair, which is when I actually started my natural hair journey.
Did you transition or big cop?
I transitioned by gradually cutting away the relaxed hair.
What is your hair type?
A mix of 3B, 3C and 4A
How did others (friends, family, and colleagues) react to your decision to go natural?
Close friends and family have always been supportive of my natural hair choice.
What is your current regimen?
I wash my hair once a week and I usually start by doing a pre-poo treatment with coconut oil while I’m detangling. I leave the oil in for about half an hour before I wash with a natural moisturising shampoo. Afterwards I do a deep conditioning treatment, which consists of a natural conditioner mixed with honey, coconut oil and avocado. Sometimes I’ll add olive oil or even avocado oil if I don’t have a fresh avo in the kitchen. After rinsing, I apply a leave-in conditioner and seal all the moisture in with coconut oil. I twist my hair in medium sized sections and let it air-dry. I wear it like that for a few days after which I undo the twists and choose another low manipulation / protective style for the week. I often just wear 2 braided pigtails on either side of my head or wear my hair in a loose bun. For weekly maintenance I spritz my hair with water daily and seal with coconut oil.
What are your holy grail products?
Coconut oil. You’ll never catch me without a steady supply of this stuff.
What do you like the most about natural hair/being natural?
I love the fact that it’s completely mine, and that I can style it in just about any way I choose to. I love big hair and with curly hair there’s no telling how big you can go!
